On The Edge is a multimedia exhibition of work by members of the Royal Society of Sculptors, created at a time when the world is on the edge with global turmoil, climate change and war in Ukraine. The exhibition was held for the first time at the Espacio Gallery, London (2023) and for the second time at OVADA, Oxford (2024). A series of guided tours, panel discussions and workshops took place on both occasions.
The exhibition featured a quote from the Ukrainian poet, Boris Khersonsky, that had inspired debate and discussion between the exhibiting artists throughout almost a year of online meetings: ‘Every hut in our beloved country is on the edge. And to be honest, I’m on the edge too. I feel sorry for the ones at the centre, but really I’m especially sorry for the ones in the camp towers, watching the frosty distance…’ Stephen Duncan, an artist and poet from South London, who also showcased some of his work at the exhibition had recently been to visit the Ukrainian exhibitors, Borys Krylov and Oles Sydoruk, in Kiev and experienced life there first hand. When Stephen returned from his trip, he told the group just how important sculpture and art were to the people there. It made the cohort think about how artists involved in an exhibition like this can contribute a positive voice in our turbulent times.
